Scientific background

Mobility in Germany/Mobilität in Deutschland (MiD)

Mobility in Germany (MiD) is a nationwide survey of households on their everyday travel behavior, commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport (BMDV). It has already been conducted in 2002, 2008, and 2017. The current study will be conducted from April 2023 until approximately May 2024. The results will be available from the end of 2024. You can find already available project information here.

Similar surveys were already conducted in 1976, 1982, and 1989 under the name "KONTIV" (Continuous Survey on Traffic Behavior).

The main objective of the study is to obtain representative and reliable information on the socio-demographics of individuals and households, as well as their everyday travel behavior (e.g., trip purposes and modes of transportation) for an entire year. Weighted and extrapolated, the results serve as a framework and supplement for other transportation surveys, such as the traffic surveys conducted in individual cities (e.g., SrV or the Mobility Panel).

The study "Mobility in Germany" provides current data on important factors influencing mobility and serves as the basis for transportation models. The results of the study are not only relevant for transportation planning, research, and scientific interest, but also provide quantitative background information for concrete political decisions.
